On the way to Muswell Hill they made small talk about things in general. Adam told her about the time he had lived in the flat a little while ago, and that it had been a real dump when he bought it.

Mary said she thought that it was not too bad now. It was quite spacious.

“I should really do it up better and charge more rent for it, but I can’t be bothered.” Adam was trying to size her up as he made conversation.

“Where are we going?” She avoided the subject.

“Here we are.” Adam pulled up in front of a flashy-looking new pub called The Last Resort.

“Very nice,” said Mary.

“Bit pricey, but hey, only the best on our first date, eh!” Adam hammed it up a bit; he was suddenly enjoying himself.

Mary groaned. “It’s just a drink, not a date.”

“I know, I know.” Adam ushered Mary into the building and asked her what she wanted to drink. As there were a few empty tables scattered about he gestured to her to grab one of them. After getting served fairly quickly, as the place was not too full, he joined Mary with the drinks.

“Well, here we are, so what do you think?” asked Adam.

“I suppose it’s okay,” said Mary. “But I quite like The Rat and Gherkin.”

Well, there’s no accounting for taste, thought Adam as he cast his eye around the place, and then he suddenly spotted a very familiar face in a corner.

It was Vera. She was having a drink with another man who Adam thought also looked familiar. He was in fact the man in the sports coupé who had earlier dropped Vera off at the school. This was very interesting to Adam, who realised that Vera had ditched him for the other man.

Adam was just wondering what he should do when Vera looked up and saw him. She let out a little gasp of surprise, unseen by her friend, but recovered quite quickly. She smiled and nodded in Adam’s direction and carried on talking.

“A friend of yours, then,” quipped Mary, as the proceedings had not gone unnoticed by her.

Adam was on the point of saying that he did not know Vera, but then decided to come clean and admitted that he used to work for her and her husband when he used to teach.

“That’s not her husband, surely?” said Mary with a tinge of sarcasm.

“I don’t think so, but I don’t know him,” replied Adam, who was now very glad that he had told the truth when he saw Vera get up and start walking over towards him.

Vera smiled as she got nearer and Adam was compelled to smile back, even though he did not feel like it.

“Well, fancy seeing you here,” said Vera. “How are you?”

“Fine,” said Adam, acting nonchalant. “And you?”

“I’m having a drink with George, who, by the way, is going to become an investor in the college. I think you should meet him if you are still thinking of investing in the business.
